How cForms 2 wiped out my Wordpress Blog

Today, I noticed on my Wordpress dashboard that another plugin was due an upgrade. I looked, and there it was — cForms version 9.0 ready for automatic install. There was a bright red warning stating that it was advisable to back up my database before updating it. Luckily, I had just received the database backup via email yesterday, via the DataBase Backup Plugin.

So, I installed the plugin and my screen went blank. Then in one foul swoop, it felled my blog for 45 minutes. I had no idea how to reset my database, so I searched the Internet and found the following tutorial from WordPress. So, if any of you out there have the same problem with this plugin (I’m using WP 2.6.2 by the way), the simple steps on this tutorial should restore your blog.

Until I get the plugin to work again, there are no contact forms here for the time being, as I’m busy with a project so I have no tinkering-time. I just have 15 minutes to write this post about my experience, and urge anyone who plans to upgrade to version 9.0 to backup, backup, backup…or risk a WP explosion of your own!

For the next few days, please send any emails to me at contactme [at] andrewkelsall [one dot] com instead of trying to use one of my forms by cForms, thanks.

BTW, I’m not blaming cForms — it may be my blog setup…I’ll investigate soon…

At least the blog’s back up – could have been worse!

  2. Yeah, glad I installed the automatic backup plugin. For some reason Richard, this comment ended up in my Askimet spam filter. I don’t know why, as your site isn’t spam.

I hope this Askimet plugin isn’t playing up as well…think I’ll start checking what’s been caught as ’spam’ on a daily basis. Have you had comments not appear on other blogs? I’d just thought I’d give you a heads up, ‘cos if its happened on mine, your comments may be auto-binned by other WP blogs with Askimet…maybe it’s because your new site is still in the Google sandbox?…

I only have trouble on Bruce Lawson’s blog, which I think picks up on the word ‘c**k’ in the domain for the email address!

Guess it’s either that, or because it’s a new website, or that my name isn’t in the name.

  4. Yeah, maybe. Depends on what ‘banned words’ he has in his spam list.
