Excellent Email Advertisement about Skype

I’m rarely impressed by email advertising campaigns, but I received such an email recently from mobile network 3. The email was advertising free Skype calls forever—and like many online-dwellers, I use of Skype myself. No, this isn’t some kind of affiliate blog-post…I just really like the design.

I just think [the excellent advert below] is pretty-well structured, meaningful, enticing and above-all, original. I also love to see designs that have a heavy emphasis on typography. I studied for my BA at Coventry University—and the tutors there really drilled typographic knowledge into us…so I suppose that’s one of the reasons why I like this so much.

By the way, if you want to add me to Skype, my user name is andrew-kelsall. What do you think of this email advertisement? Do you think “it works”? Have you been impresed by any other email campaigns?

  1. I think this ad works. I like it personally as well. I think many people who tend to use Skype and are willing to read these emails are typically designers and developers who would enjoy nice typography.

As a designer, this really appeals to me more-so ‘than if I weren’t', I assume, so there’s sense in what you say. Thanks for commenting.

  3. I agree that the idea for this ad is effective, however the blue type just isn’t as legible as it could be (in my opinion). Making it a darker blue, a maroon, or another bold but dark colour would improve the response. The designer should go for the condensed all-caps typeface OR the pale colouring, not both. This is because the typestyle loses its word shapes, making it difficult for the eye to skim the words. When the copy is a pale colour as well it doubles the effort it takes to read these words.
When I look at an e-mail advertisement I’ll give it about 5-10 seconds to catch my eye and lure me in, after that its straight to the trash folder. I have a feeling that although this is a good idea for an ad, it would end up in my trash folder.

I see your point, however, I scaled the image down to fit the proportions of my article column. On the actual email image advertisement, the text is quite crisp. Sorry I should have mentioned this.

Also, the image is a re-JPG of a JPG, causing image degradation. One of my previous articles about how images can be affected by re-saving in compressed formats is located here if you want to take a look:
