Designer Tobias Bergdahl has created some stunning graphics entitled 12 paradoxes of graphic design. Here, I have selected a few of them to show you, but please check out his post for the full set. I particularly like the graphic and quote combination above: “The best way to become a better graphic designer is to become a client”. True.

These are brilliant!
A while back I actually considered trying to create an optical illusion such as these for my identity, as I think they’re a great visual interpretation of what a designer actually does.

I love these. They are so beautiful. I’m only concerned about #4. It is truly a paradox! Recently I had a very awkward situation where, as a designer with over 10 years of experience, I was asked by a large company to do a design for free. The benefits of course being exposure and future jobs. After days of discussion over the phone and via email, I decided to stand by payment, albeit at a hugely discounted rate. They went with someone else. My question then is, at what point as a designer do we finally refuse to do work for free/low rates in exchange for other benefits? For me, that point is now. I drew a line. But is there any generally accepted etiquette regarding this?
Great post and wonderful designs by Tobias.

Paul → Yeah, great aren’t they?!

Nick → I like the poster; looks like a paradox-magnet rather than a fork. Which band was it for?

Jen → I wouldn’t do this myself, but each designer has to assess each situation. For me, if a company doesn’t want to pay, then stay clear…

Hi, and thanks for posting my stuff:) Much appreciated. What I have realized with these 12 paradoxes is that everyone has an opinion about them and it´s always really nice to hear your different views on it.
I also have difficulties to fully believe in all the 12 paradoxes but they make you reflect on your self and your work.
