I received an email recently from someone about wanting to be a Christian Graphic Designer. I will obviously keep the person’s name confidential, but here is the question asked, with my answer afterwards. I have included this Q&A so others may benefit from it:
Hello, my name is [let's say] Dave, and I want to be a Christian Graphic Designer. The problem is that I’m not sure about the right education. Which is better – a for profit or not for profit college, regionally or nationally accredited, Associate of Science or Associate of Arts in Graphic Design, a Christian or Community college? Any advice in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The best advice that I could give to you is not an academic answer. To be honest, I have no idea what a regionally or nationally accredited college is. For a Christian, that is, someone who has given their life to Jesus and has received the promised Holy Spirit, all important decisions like this should be made with prayer.
Been educated doesn’t make someone a great designer. It’s God’s gifting that makes a Christian designer useful to God. I went to University and did a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design, but this was something I prayed about first. When applying for Universities to attend, I originally wanted to go to Manchester, UK, so I applied and was shown around the University by invite. However, it didn’t ‘feel right’ spiritually. I prayed to the LORD that if it wasn’t His Will that I attended that University, that He would stop me from going.
This is exactly what happened—and I was both disappointed that I didn’t get in, but was profoundly delighted that the LORD had answered my prayer. This is what I believed.
Eventually, I received an unconditional offer from Coventry University—which was a great offer—and I accepted. I felt this was the LORD’s plan for my life. It was in this University that I worked on Christian based-projects—even on my secular course.
As a closing remark, I’d like to say that you should listen the the LORD Jesus, not what anyone says you should do. When I was at college, and was planning to go to University, I was told by my tutor that I shouldn’t bother. She told me I wasn’t good enough. I knew in my spirit that I should be applying, prayed about it, and as mentioned achieved an unconditional offer from at top University.
When it comes down to it. Pray.
Hope this helps
